Eldfjall——A bad-tempered old man who thinks and cries on the toilet now
Volcano” is a small literary film by Icelandic director Runa Runason. It’s a small literary film by Icelandic director Runarsson. I have not been able to find resources for a long time, and I have watched it on the web with intermittent subtitles.
Hanks is indeed a bad old man that people do not want to get close to, before retiring, but still do not forget to punish the cheating students. On his way home from work, the aging man walks through a group of energetic teenagers playing basketball. He lights a cigarette, sits in his car and kills himself with car exhaust, only to somehow give up in the end.
He goes out to sea alone to catch fish and inexplicably breaks a big hole in his boat. He took off his soaked clothes in the yard and walked naked through the astonished eyes of his children. He also likes to gawk, sit on the toilet and gawk, then climb into bed and hug his Anna baby. An old man in his sixties, he loves extra hard.
He stood at the window waiting for Anna to come home from work, and when he saw her enter he hurriedly sat down on the sofa and pretended to read the newspaper carefully. Anna said, I want to know why you are always so unhappy. He, who always loses his temper, is now gently touching Anna’s face. Anna suddenly collapsed on the floor while she was drinking her favorite halibut soup.
When he knew Anna was sick, he sat on the toilet and cried again. When he returned from the hospital, Hanks, who was sprawled out in bed with his clothes on, was particularly lonely. Hannes watched Anna who moaned in pain at night, he held her and moaned like she did. Finally, unable to see Anna suffer, he ended her life himself.
The children all disliked the bad-tempered man. The daughter said, “I wish he hadn’t been home when I came to visit my mother. They do not understand how their mother can tolerate the bad-tempered Hanks, nor do they understand Hanks’ hidden love. When the son comes to visit his mother, Hanks hides out to fix his broken boat.
The children could not understand why he had to take care of his mother at home alone and wanted to send her to a nursing home, and he yelled at them to mind their own business. But this strange old man hides in his house alone and secretly shows pictures of his youth. The photos show Anna, of whom he is most proud, and his two lovely children.
He yells at his little grandson playing soccer in the garden. Kari disliked this grumpy, bad grandpa from the start, and the swinging lad immediately ran away when he appeared. Kari took the children’s machine gun he had just bought and hid in the bushes in the garden to aim at him, wanting to shoot the old devil in the face.
Then Kari saw his grandfather repairing his forty-year old broken boat, and he ran over to ask him what he was doing. He too, as if he had suddenly lost his bad temper, taught him to sand the rim of the boat, and the old man and the young man were in the yard painting the old boat with new paint. The old man gave Kali to listen to the sound of the boat’s engine and promised to take him out fishing with him when the boat was repaired.
On the day of Anna’s funeral, everyone was grieving and reading prayers with the priest, except Hannes, who was expressionless and motionless. Hannes knew what love was, so he could not speak. He killed Anna because of love, and without Anna’s love, it was colder than death for him. Is love colder than death?
Finally Hannes left the crowd at the funeral scene and went to the sea alone, standing on the edge of the cliff he was so small, like a lonely and unsupported leaf floating on the sea. The movie ends in the back of the grandfather and grandson out at sea. And the endless love and death, is always the unresolved proposition that plagues all people.
