The movie “Catch Me If You Can” tells the story of a teenager named Frank Abanel who ran away from home after his parents divorced. He fraudulently obtained cash by forging checks, and succeeded again and again. As his modus operandi has become more sophisticated, Frank has not only traveled all over the United States, he has also gone abroad to defraud more than 20 countries, and he has therefore become the most wanted criminal of the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). However, Frank Abanel in “Catch Me If You Can” is not a fiction, but a real person. The movie is adapted from his life and deeds. Today we will talk about the legendary experience of the youngest most wanted criminal in American history.
Frank Abanel was born in New York, USA in 1948. His father runs a stationery business, and his mother is an authentic French beauty. In his childhood, Frank was in a superior family and had a richer life. But when he was 16 years old, his father’s business failed and his parents divorced because of a relationship breakdown. The successive blows made Frankton feel the darkness in his life, so he chose to run away from home to escape the pain of family life.
The 16-year-old Frank had no income and no one to rely on. Under the pressure of his livelihood, he began to embark on the criminal path of fraudulently obtaining cash by forging checks. At that time, many people in the United States wanted to get something for nothing by forging checks, but the success rate was extremely low due to the clumsy means of fraud. Frank also hit the wall one after another at the beginning, but he was naturally smart and quickly figured out the doorway. As a result, fictitious checks continued to flow out of Frank’s hands.
In order to facilitate the fraud, Frank forged a set of pilot documents. Since then, he has taken a free plane as the deputy captain of Pan American Airlines, shuttled across the country, and defrauded as many as millions of dollars in cash with forged checks, which was an astronomical figure at the time.
Frank is young and handsome, with the title of deputy captain, and still has money in his pocket, which naturally makes him the prince charming in the hearts of many flight attendants. Therefore, whenever Frank takes a flight, there is always a stewardess who takes the initiative to greet him. But they never expected that this rich Pan Am vice captain would turn out to be a counterfeit.
Frank’s fraud quickly attracted the attention of the FBI, but it was not easy to catch this extremely clever liar. FBI agent Carl, who was responsible for arresting Frank, dispatched several times. The sky is full of nets, but Frank can still escape easily. As the amount of fraud increased, Frank became the FBI’s most wanted criminal, when he was less than twenty years old.
As it became more and more difficult to commit crimes at home, Frank began to expand his fraud business overseas. In just a few years, Frank has traveled to 26 countries and truly internationalized the fraud business, and he has therefore become the most wanted criminal in these countries.
After five years of scams, Frank finally fell from the horse in France due to a small oversight. He was extradited back to the United States after serving 6 months in France and sentenced to 12 years in prison. However, Frank’s legendary experience is not over here.
In 1974, 26-year-old Frank was released from prison early. At that time, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) was struggling with check fraud cases. The FBI agent Carl who was in charge of arresting Frank suggested that Frank work for the FBI and use his extensive experience to catch cheque fraudsters. In this way, Frank went from being a most wanted criminal to being an adviser to the FBI, completing his life transformation almost perfectly. It is worth mentioning that Frank Abanel himself also appeared as a French policeman in “Cat and Mouse Game” and personally caught the “Frank Abanel” played by Leonardo. Let the deity capture the playing self, which is also a more interesting plot design in the movie.
Frank Abanel is still alive today. He lives in the Midwestern United States with his wife and three sons. He is currently the world’s recognized authority on anti-bank fraud. He has designed anti-counterfeit checks that can be used safely for many banks and multinational groups, and these institutions pay him millions of dollars every year. The most wanted man of the year eventually became a real winner in life.
